2025 Dry Conditions

SCIC understands the challenges facing producers across Saskatchewan as dry conditions negatively impact the potential of many crops, including forage.

SCIC is working with producers to discuss options with pre-harvest appraisals and putting crops to alternate use. Contact your local SCIC office to review the Program requirements before putting a crop to alternate use.

Putting Your Crop to an Alternate Use

SCIC is committed to supporting Crop Insurance customers in making timely decisions. Contact your local SCIC office. Our staff will guide you through the process, which may include leaving checkstrips.

Request an Inspection

As a producer, you decide what you want to do with your crop. Prior to putting damaged crops to an approved alternate use, contact your local SCIC office.  An inspection must be requested prior to putting insured acres to an alternate use.

Pre-Harvest Worksheet

A Pre-Harvest Worksheet is available to help make decisions for your crop. Prior to putting damaged crops to an approved alternate use, you need to contact your local customer service office. This workbook is not intended to replace adjuster appraisals, but rather to assist you when making operational decisions. Producer appraised yields are for information purposes only and will NOT be used for the claim or for future coverage.

Low Yield Appraisal – Changes For The 2025 Growing Season

Crop Insurance allows acres of low-yielding eligible crops to be diverted to make additional feed available to graze, bale or silage.

When crops are severely damaged and the appraised yield falls below an established threshold level, the yield is reduced to zero for the Crop Insurance claim. SCIC is doubling the low yield appraisal threshold values allowing customers to salvage their eligible crops as feed, without negatively impacting future individual coverage. Prior to compensation, all qualifying acres for double low yield appraisals must be diverted to livestock feed. They cannot be left to harvest. Prior to putting damaged crops to an approved alternate use, producers should contact their local SCIC office.

Livestock producers are encouraged to work directly with neighbouring crop producers to access additional feed.

Doubled Low Yield Appraisal Calculations

The doubled low yield appraisal is only available for customers who bale, graze or silage eligible crops. Once a customer completes the alternate use for feed, the appraised yield is reduced to zero for the Crop Insurance claim.

For producers looking to put partial acres to approved alternate use for feed, a Pre-Harvest appraisal must be completed. Only baled, grazed or silage crops are eligible for a doubled low yield appraisal. If the appraised yield is below the double low yield appraisal threshold, the claim is set to zero. SCIC must account for all harvested and appraised production in the calculation of the customer’s claim.
