Help: Premium Calculator

How do I use the premium calculator?

Select a crop

From the drop down list, pick a crop. All insurable crops are listed.

Price Option
There are different price options available depending on the crop that you have selected. Base and Low price options are set by SCIC based on price forecasts early in the crop year. The Variable price option uses forecasts that are set in July of the crop year and therefore cannot be used in the premium calculation until that time. The In-Season price option uses a 6 month average price from September of the crop year to February of the following year. If the premium rate for the In-Season price option has not been set; the Base price is used in this calculator. The Crop Averaging Price calculator is available elsewhere on this site. If you wish to use it click on the CAP calculator button. The Contract price option cannot currently be calculated using this premium calculator.

Units
Select imperial or metric. Calculations will automatically default to metric.

Land to Calculate
Risk Area and Soil Class are both factors which influence the yield level and premium rates for crop insurance. These two variables are driven by the land selected. By default, your contract’s weighted average land location is used in this calculation. If you would like to review the calculations based on different land, you have the option in this calculator of choosing any land that you have registered, or other land in the province of Saskatchewan.

Estimated Yield
If you are a new crop insurance customer and would like to use your personal yield history rather than the area average for the crop selected, you have the option of providing your records to SCIC for this purpose. To calculate the premium rate and coverage level at your estimated yield levels, enter a yield level per acre in the Estimated Yield field in this calculator.

Why is the risk zone included in my premium calculation?

  • The Risk Zone is a factor used in the calculation of premiums for insurance coverage. The Risk Zone is specific to the type of crop that is being calculated. The selection of the risk zone is driven by the location of the land that is being used. For more information, or to see the risk zone maps for each type of crop click here.

Why is soil class included in my calculation?

  • The Soil Class is a factor used in the calculation of the premiums for insurance coverage. The Soil Class used in the calculation is driven by the location of the land. By default, the weighted average of land registered on your contract is used to set the soil class. If you change the land location used in the calculation, the soil class may change correspondingly.

Why are stubble, irrigation and summerfallow used in this calculator?

  • If a crop is planted into land that was in summerfallow for the prior crop year, the premium rate and yield coverage levels may be different than if the land was used for crop production in the prior year. These rates are reflected in the calculation results.
  • Stubble land use results reflect the premium rate and yield coverage levels for the crop if it is planted into land that was cropped in the prior year.
  • Irrigation land use results reflect the premium rate and yield coverage levels for the crop if it is planted into land that is irrigated.

How do I endorse my crop from this calculator?

  • The calculator will tell you your cost and coverage at every coverage option. Select the coverage you prefer for the crop and click on the "select" button. If the "select" button is faded, you have already selected that coverage option.
