Derek Smart

Derek grew up on a farm near Moosomin. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in agriculture in 2009, majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Business. Since coming home, he has transitioned the farm from a 300 head commercial operation to a 200 head purebred Black Angus herd: Smart Farms Angus. Their cattle operation is complimented by a grain operation jointly operated with his father Dale.

Smart Farms Angus is Derek's focus and passion, as he enjoys the pursuit and combination of old and new genetics. The Farm attends “the yards” at Agribition and host an on-farm bull and female sale, held every March.

Derek has become president of the local rodeo committee and continues to be a part of church committees. This involvement has branched into the committee who started the local food grains project, Harvest of Hope. This project has been operating for five years and continues to be a passion. Derek and his wife Joelle continue to expand their farming operation and involvement in the community.
